Campus & Academic Systems

Your accounts, the systems that run your degree, and how not to miss a registration deadline.

The one thing that can end your enrolment Students who do not register for courses within the specified period are regarded as having no intention to remain a student and are subject to forced withdrawal. Registration windows are short and close to the minute. Put every date in §4 into your calendar on day one.

1. Your accounts

You need two accounts, and people mix them up constantly. They are different things, created in different ways, and you need both.

AccountWhat it is forHow you get it
CNS account (SFC Campus Network System)Campus network and Wi-Fi, SFC-SFS, SFC lab machines, and your @sfc.keio.ac.jp mail where applicable.Created in person, with your Student ID Card, by the deadline announced after enrolment. Do not miss it. Handled by the Shonan Fujisawa ITC service desk.
Keio ID / keio.jpSingle sign-on for university-wide services: Keio Mail, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, K-Support, K-LMS (Canvas), grades, library and database access, software licences, campus Wi-Fi.Online activation, once only. See the steps below.

1.1 Activating your Keio ID

  1. Get your activation key from the SFC-CNS account on-line activation site: activation.sfc.keio.ac.jp/mag
  2. Activate at activation.keio.jp — the service opens from 1 April, 8:30 a.m. for spring entrants. Allow about an hour before your first login works. Help: activation help (English)
  3. Set up multi-factor authentication (MFA) — mandatory. Have a PC and a smartphone to hand. Instructions: Keio MFA setup guide
Choose your Keio ID carefully In principle your Keio ID cannot be changed, and it becomes your Keio Mail address. Pick something professional and readable — you will put it on job applications.

1.2 Email

  • @keio.jp is where every official notice from the university arrives. Check it daily.
  • Always write to faculty and offices from your @keio.jp address. Messages from personal or external accounts are frequently not answered, for security and verification reasons.
  • Students enrolled earlier may also hold an @sfc.keio.ac.jp CNS address.

2. Campus Wi-Fi

Note that some services (messengers, connections to hosts outside Keio) require the authenticated network rather than an open one. Wi-Fi FAQ and troubleshooting: SFC ITC — Wi-Fi FAQ

[EDITOR NOTE] Dates above are from SFC GUIDE 2026. Replace with the current academic year’s dates each spring, and add a line saying which year they apply to.

4.2 How to register

  1. Search the syllabus and build a draft timetable before the window opens. Note which courses require a student screening.
  2. Apply for student screenings by their own deadlines (see 4.4).
  3. Register in K-Support during the first registration window. Then click the “CHECK” button — this is what verifies your registration contains no errors. Registration is not complete without it.
  4. Use the second registration window to fill gaps left by screening results.
  5. Confirm your registration by the confirmation deadline.

You cannot add courses or change fields after the registration period closes. There is no late exception.

Full procedure: About Registration — SFC · Course registration manual

4.3 Credit caps

CapLimit
Credits counting toward advancement and graduation, per semester20
Total credits including optional subjects, per semester30
Credits from distance-learning (online) classes counted toward graduation, in total60
Excluded from the per-semester capsPhysical Education courses, Special Research Projects, study-abroad language courses

Registering over the cap results in automatic cancellation of the excess — and you do not choose which ones go.

4.4 Student screenings (履修選抜)

Many SFC courses limit enrolment and select students in advance by assignment or lottery.

Screening ≠ registration Applying for a screening and registering for the course are two different processes. Being selected does not enrol you. If you do not separately register within the deadline, you lose the place. Details: Student screenings

4.5 Dropping a course

A cancellation period runs in late April (spring) and mid-October (fall). Some courses cannot be cancelled: Physical Education 2–5, study-abroad language courses, Special Research Projects, Graduation Projects, and courses from other faculties whose sponsoring faculty forbids withdrawal.

4.6 Course fields

Most undergraduate courses are assigned a field automatically. For courses from other faculties or research institutes you must set the field yourself — “04-01-01 Courses Offered by Other Faculties, etc.” or “90-01-02 Optional Subjects and Others”. Restrictions on other faculties’ courses

5. Language courses

SFC teaches English, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Malay-Indonesian, Arabic, German, French, Spanish, Russian and Italian.

  • Placement tests are held during orientation each semester. You must sit one before registering for any course above Basic 1 / Intensive 1. The schedule is posted on K-Support “News” at grade-announcement time.
  • Some lecture courses have paired content versions; choosing the content option records the course under a “Language Communication” field.
  • Study Abroad language courses (A: 4 credits, B: 2 credits) run during the breaks. You must register for them in the semester immediately following participation, and they cannot be cancelled.

Programme site: language.sfc.keio.ac.jp

6. The GIGA Program and the GIGA Certificate

GIGA (Global Information and Governance Academic) is Keio’s first English-language undergraduate degree programme, run by the Faculty of Policy Management and the Faculty of Environment and Information Studies. The GIGA Certificate is a separate award recognising completion of designated English-taught coursework plus a language standard — you must apply for it; it is not granted automatically.

9. Commuting to campus

SFC sits 3.5 km from Shonandai, the nearest station. Most people take the bus. A lot of people cycle.

9.1 Student commuter pass (通学定期券)

Unlimited travel between the station nearest your home and the station nearest campus, loaded onto your existing Suica or PASMO. Available in one-, three- and six-month terms — longer terms are cheaper per month but riskier if the card is lost.

  1. Log in to the Certificate Issuance Service and apply for “03_Student Commuter Certificate for issuance of student commuter pass”.
  2. Print the Student Commuter Certificate (通学証明書) at a convenience store or a certificate issuing machine on campus.
  3. Fill in the route, validity period and start date, then take it to a station ticket office or bus ticket counter to buy the pass.
  4. Update your address in K-Support before applying if it has changed — the pass is issued against your registered address.
  5. A pass can only be issued for the single most economical route between home and campus. Travelling outside the route costs extra fare.
  6. For a combined pass spanning two different lines (for example Sotetsu and Tokyu), you must go to Yokohama Station.
  7. The pass is non-transferable and may be used only by the registered holder.
  8. Research students are eligible only for a regular commuter pass (通勤定期券), not a student pass — still cheaper than daily fares.

Procedure: Commuter passes — Keio Student Website

9.2 Bicycle

Shonandai Station to SFC is about 3 km of hilly road, roughly 20 minutes on a bike. At peak times the bus queue is long enough that cycling is often faster, and you are never at the mercy of a delayed bus before a first-period class. One rule to know: bicycles in Japan have to be registered against theft (自転車防犯登録) at the shop you buy them from, and a second-hand bike must be re-registered in your name.
